Fletcher & Penatzer Win Sydney Youth Cup

Monday, May 22, 2017

Australia’s ultimate Youth tournament delivered plenty of excitement on the weekend with the boy’s division going down to the wire and American Heather Penatzer dominating the girls division.

Following 10 games of qualifying Blayne Fletcher sat in 9th place and 140 pins behind the leader Jayden Panella.

In stage one of the final, Fletcher began the push for his maiden 2017 ranked title by racing out of the blocks bowling 224 in game 1 and in the final three games bowling 255, 240 and 279 to sit in third behind leader Adam Svensson.

Heading into the matchplay finals Fletcher was chasing the bonus points in the 5 matches. After going down in the first match the 20-year-old hit back winning games 2 and 3 to then take it down to the wire in the final match where he overtook Jayden Panella to snatch victory by 3 pins, resulting in Panella finishing in second and Svensson in third.

In the girls division, two time member of junior team USA, Heather Penatzer put in a dominant display over the two days, but it wasn’t all easy going for the Sam Houston State University representative. On day 1 Penatzer took time to get her eye in on the lanes but hit back in the later games which included a 268 in game 9 to average 208.9 and sat in second place behind Janet Hunt who was averaging a commanding 216.7.

In the 8 games finals, the American started strong bowling games of 279, 204, 277 and 200 across the first 4 games to then drop under the card in games 5 to 8 but manage to take the lead from Hunt by 114 pins heading into the match play rounds.

In the final 5 matches, Penatzer showed her class powering ahead winning 4 of the 5 games to claim her first Australian title by 249 pins.

With Penatzer not qualifying under the rules for a chance to roll off for the once in a lifetime trip to France to compete at the Youth International Jeff De Bruge Tournament, Fletcher was awarded the ultimate prize but the American will take home a 12 month sponsorship with Hammer.
