Belmonte Finishes 3rd At PBA Oklahoma Open

Monday, July 03, 2017

Australia’s Jason Belmonte has finished third at the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort PBA Oklahoma Open early this morning Australian time, to fall short of claiming his 15th PBA Tour title.

Belmonte came from 28th in the first round and 12th after Thursday's third round, then averaged 256 in the final round to grab the No. 2 position with 7208 pinfall.  Chris Barnes, who qualified fourth for the stepladder finals, progressed to the match against Belmonte after defeating six-time Tour winner Jesper Svensson of Sweden, 190-149 and No. 3 qualifier Rhino Page 206-185.

With the match broadcast on ESPN, Barnes came out of the blocks fast and Belmonte, the three-time PBA Player of the Year took time to feel comfortable on the lanes. As the match progressed Belmonte left his run too late and he could only watch on to see Barnes take the match 256-218.

With the Australian out of contention, Barnes and Marshall Kent battled it out for victory in the final match.  With both players struggling to start the match, Kent fired four consecutive strikes in the ninth and tenth frames to defeat Barnes, 194-188 and win his second title of the season and fourth of his career.

The only other Australian to compete at the tournament, Sam Cooley got off to a strong start in qualifying finishing the three rounds of qualifying in 11th and one place in front of Belmonte averaging 216.  After progressing to the casher round Cooley slid down the leader board to finish in 25th, 230 pins from a top 9 finish and from progressing to the stepladder rounds.
