Monday, March 05, 2018

Matt Clague and Emma Stephens have dominated the 2018 Werribee Youth Cup on the weekend, winning their first youth ranked event titles at Wyncity Bowl & Entertainment.

With a strong field assembling for the second national ranked youth event for the year, both Clague and Stephens found their line in qualifying to take the lead heading into the match play rounds.

Clague came out of the blocks firing with games of 205, 206, 258, 257 and 228 to finish the first block of qualifying in a strong position and continued this form in the second block bowling games of 193 233, 202, 239 and 181 to move into stage 2 round, sitting 31 pins ahead of second placed, Jayden Panella.

Clague continued strongly on Sunday averaging 228, 113 pins ahead of Blayne Fletcher.  With only 5 matches left to decide the 2018 champion, Clague lost the first two to come back in the third, and then follow it up with wins in matches four and five to take the title by 144 pins (4466) from second placed Fletcher (4322) with Jayden Panella rounding out the podium in third (4229).

For Stephens who came into the tournament not having had victory on the youth circuit, the nerves kicked in on games one and two of qualifying with the Campbelltown bowler rolling games of 181 and 187.  But after getting her eye in, the 18-year-old went 278, 225, 202 in the final three games of block one to put herself in contention with 5 games to go in the afternoon.

In block two, Stephens found her consistency to bowl 196, 198, 175 and finish with a 222 to sit in first place with a 2056 pinfall and 143 pins ahead of second placed Jamie Phelan.

In the match play rounds Stephens lost the first match, to then go on and take the maximum bonus points in match two.  With the pressure mounting Stephens lost matches three and four but increased her pinfall enough to see her win the final match and take the 2018 title by 99 pins from Phelan (2929) in second and Grace Fahy (2849) in third.
