Strong Field To Assemble For The 2018 NSW Open

Friday, September 07, 2018

A strong field will gather for this weekend’s NSW Open at Tenpin City, with the tournament welcoming back 2017 champions Sam Cooley and Narelle Baker who will compete for a winners cheque and free entry into the USBC Masters and USBC Queens.

When qualifying gets underway on Saturday, both Cooley and Baker will line up looking to repeat history. After pipping former Australian representative – Brendan Meads at the post in last year’s event and finishing ahead of world number one, Jason Belmonte, Cooley will head into the weekend as the favourite after winning three ranked event titles so far in 2018.

With a talented field registered for the tournament, Cooley will face some familiar competitors and winners at this level in George Frilingos and Jarrod Langford.

Having won the 2017 Rollin’ Thunder together, Frilingos and Langford will keep the pressure on Cooley this weekend with Frilingos searching for his first ranked event win in 2018 and Langford shooting for his second, following victory in June at the Melbourne Tenpin Cup.

Having 2017 runner up Brendan Meads also returning alongside local Glen Loader and Lachlan Merchant a winner could come from anywhere in the men’s field on Sunday afternoon.

In the women’s division, 2017 champion Narelle Baker will begin her title hopes in squad B on Saturday, alongside 2014, 2015 and 2016 winner Bec Whiting. Following a battle in last year’s match play rounds it came down to the wire with Baker raining on Whiting’s hopes of a 4th consecutive title to take the title by 20 pins.

After finishing 7th last year Rebecca Voukolos will return to the national circuit this weekend alongside Jenny Notman, Dena Buxton and Bec Martin who can all take the 2018 NSW Open title.
