Langford Wins Back-to-Back Melbourne Tenpin Cup Titles

Monday, June 10, 2019

Jarrod Langford has won back to back Schweppes Melbourne Tenpin Cupís, holding off PBA bowler Sam Cooley late yesterday to win his second national open ranked event of 2019.

When the 47th running of the Melbourne Tenpin Cup got underway on Saturday morning the North Queensland bowler opened with 247 and 257.  With the rest of the field on notice Langford continued qualifying which included a 279 in game seven to average 235 over ten games but sit in third place behind leader Sam Cooley and Gavin Bedford in second.

The powerful left-hander shot to the lead after stage two with games of 279, 201, 233, 237 and 246, which saw the 22-year-old take a 35-pin lead over Cooley heading into the match play rounds.

On Sunday, Langford did not get his first win until match three and with a win in match four, Langford was behind Cooley by 16 pins, after the New South Welshman had won all of his first four matches.

Langford bounced back in Game 6 to bowl 269 to gain the maximum bonus pins to overtake Cooley by a mere 8 pins.  Game 7 Jarrod stretched his lead by 28 pins and that meant it came down to the final match.  Despite Sam outscoring Jarrod in the final game (248 Ė 234), the NQ bowler took out the 2019 Schweppes Melbourne Tenpin Cup.  South Australian Matthew Krinis finished in third place.

Dena Buxton was the best placed female in the event finishing in 7th with Bec Whiting completing the tournament in 8th place overall.

Sam now heads overseas to compete in the PBF Philippine International Open, which he won last year.
