Day 4 Recap: Two Bronze Medals for Australia in Doubles!

The first session of Day 4 at the 17th Asian Seniors Bowling Championship in Singapore has wrapped up, and Australia has secured two bronze medals in the Doubles events with the Men’s Senior and Women’s Grand Senior events concluding.

Heading into the final squads for both divisions, Australia was in strong medal contention, with Jamie Carroll and Jason Newman leading the Men’s Seniors and Robyn Flynn and Julie Harrison holding third position in the Women’s Grand Seniors.

As the final squad’s got underway, in the Men’s Seniors Doubles, Glenn Rowland and Dan Borey delivered the best performance of the Aussies in the final squad, finishing with a combined total of 2,470. After a stellar Singles campaign, Dan continued his red-hot form, averaging 219.17 across six games. The other Aussie pair, Amin Dreik and Robbie Douglas, finished 11th in the squad with 2,353, with Amin averaging 217.5.

As the final games unfolded, all eyes were on the standings to see if Jamie and Jason’s earlier performance would hold up. Despite their incredible effort, Singapore surged to the top with a score of 2,695, followed by Japan with 2,651, pushing the Aussie duo to 3rd place, earning them a bronze medal!

In the Women’s Grand Senior Doubles, Maxine Forrest and Heather Robertson bowled admirably, finishing 7th in the squad with 2,023. Day 3 at the 17th Asian Seniors Bowling Championships – Doubles Event Kicks Off

The action continued on Day 3 in Singapore with the commencement of the second event of the championships—Doubles! In the first session, the Men’s Seniors and Women’s Grand Seniors hit the lanes for an exciting day of competition.

Four Australian pairs bowled in the opening Men’s Seniors squad, and one pair, in particular, delivered an outstanding performance—Jason Newman and Jamie Carroll. After a challenging Singles event where Jason finished 31st and Jamie 72nd, the duo came out swinging in Doubles, putting up some incredible scores.

Jamie fired off games of 268, 267, and 256, while Jason bowled consistently, with games of 221, 224, and 223. Jason maintained scores above 200 all day, with Jamie experiencing a slight hiccup in game 5. Jamie’s six-game total came to 1,319, and Jason’s to 1,314, giving them a combined score of 2,633. A dog fight to the end, with the help from an Aussie dominate crowd, the boys finished off strong to hold off the fast-finishing teams from Korea and place them on the top of the standings for the first squad. Now, it’s a nervous wait to see how the standings hold up after the remaining squads bowl (one tonight, one tomorrow). Well done Jamie and Jason—what a turnaround!

  • Colin Ruffy & Wayne Smith – 6th place (2,492)
  • David Edwards & Ian Strahan – 9th place (2,346)

In the Women’s Grand Seniors, fresh off her gold medal win in the Singles event, Julie Harrison teamed up with Robyn Flynn for the Doubles. The pair, who have bowled together in previous Australian campaigns, put on an impressive display, finishing second in the squad. Julie scored 1,187, and Robyn added 1,130 for a combined total of 2,317—a fantastic effort from the pair!

Two other Australian pairs also competed in the first Women’s Grand Seniors squad:

  • Jill Morris & Tracey Farquharson – 8th place (1,866)
  • Fely Shih & Jeanette Davis – 9th place (1,820)

For the fourth and final time in 2024, Australian bowlers are back on the international stage as the 17th Asian Seniors Bowling Championship kicks off in Singapore today!

The team arrived safely over the weekend, greeted by hot and humid conditions. That didn’t stop them from heading straight to the host venue – SingaporeBowling @ Rifle Range for some unofficial practice to acclimate to the venue. The Aussies are eager to get started and enjoyed socialising with the large contingent of Australian supporters throughout the weekend.

Brenda Kirkwood, a key figure in organising this trip, shared that this year’s group is the largest she’s been a part of since her first year in 2003—a testament to the growing presence of Australia at this event over the past two decades!

Today, the team will participate in the Managers’ Meeting to hear any last-minute updates before the official events kick off tomorrow. After the meeting, the team will be formally welcomed at the Opening Ceremony before completing their official practice sessions—one last chance to get familiar with the lanes before the Singles event begins tomorrow.

We’re excited to have our ‘TBA roving reporter,’ Jamie Carroll, on the ground to provide photos and updates throughout the championship. Huge thanks to Jamie for helping keep everyone in the loop!
