Celebrating a Historic Return to the West

The 36th National Disability Championships has come to a close for another year — and what a year it was!

For the first time in 15 years, the Championships returned to Western Australia, with Zone Bowling Morley proudly hosting the eleven-day celebration of inclusion, competition, and community.

Presented and delivered by Australian Disabilities Tenpin Incorporated (ADTI) and Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA), this year’s Championships welcomed over 350 bowlers from across the country, alongside an incredible support crew of carers, coaches, families, and friends who brought the venue to life.

Volunteers – The Heartbeat of the Championships

An event of this scale wouldn’t be possible without the extraordinary work of the volunteers. Huge thanks to ADTI Committee: Louise Cooke, Calvin Jenkins, Kaye Talbot, Jenny Tiernan, Kylie McLeish, Lee Strong, and Dianne Milton, Zone Bowling Morley, WA Disability Tenpin, and Beth Boyd from TBA for their tireless efforts in coordinating the Championships. The Tournament team led by Louise and Calvin are truly the lifeblood of the event, ensuring everything runs smoothly and every participant feels supported. Take a bow, team!

Classic Masters – WA Clean Sweep in the West

It’s been 15 years since WA hosted the National Disability Championships — and local bowlers made sure to make it memorable. In the Classic Masters, the host state claimed all three podium spots.

Josh Powell led the way in the roll-off with 1,947, followed closely by Owen Thomas (1,900) and Timothy Watts (1,847). Owen defeated Timothy 231–184 in the semi-final before a nail-biting final saw Josh edge Owen by just one pin — 241 to 240 — to take the title.

Restricted Masters – Nathan Pye Holds His Nerve

In the Restricted Masters, it was ACT’s Nathan Pye who produced the goods when it mattered most. After finishing 3rd in the roll-off (1,799), Nathan went on a tear — defeating Aimee Smith (211–208) and top seed Tracey Stevenson (194–179) to force a repechage final.

In the rematch, Nathan stayed composed and delivered a 230–208 win to claim the national title.

A special shout out to Michelle Cook (ACT) and Vlad Dionysiou (NT), who originally qualified 7th and 16th respectively in the Restricted Masters. Both bowlers have withdrawn from the finals, allowing the next in line — Christopher Lyon (WA) and Sarah Booth (ACT) — to move into the top 16 and take their place in the final.

There was one more change to the Top 16 in the Restricted Masters final. The 9th highest qualifier from WA Ciara Johnson has withdrawn, meaning Michael Argent entered the top 16 field.

Presenting the awards on Masters Day was State Member for Mount Lawley, Frank Paolino, who took the time to meet bowlers and hand out medals and plaques. A big thank you to MP Paolino for attending and celebrating the achievements of this amazing community.

CARERS CHALLENGE

Always a highlight, on the final day of the Championships, before presentations, the carer challenge takes place.

A special event for parents, carers, and supporters to take to the lanes after all their work during the week.
