Ranked Recap: 2024 Brunswick Seniors Invitational

The second annual Brunswick Seniors Invitational at Bowlarama Wetherill Park in New South Wales saw intense competition and remarkable performances over the weekend. This event, the fourth in the TBA senior and grand senior nationally ranked series for 2024, featured the familiar format of 18 games in two appearances, producing some big scores.

Female Division Champion

Victorian Dena Buxton claimed victory in the female division, finishing with a total of 3,735 and an impressive average of 207.5. Buxton’s brilliant first day set up her victory, as she maintained scores above 201 in the first nine games, her total of +139 for the first day was exciting. Returning on day two to achieve a high game of 248 in game two, the Victorian’s title marks Buxton’s second national title for 2024, following her success at the John Sullivan Senior Australian Open earlier this year. With another maximum 100 points, Buxton is closing in on leader Samantha Matthews with only one event remaining.

Madeline FitzRoy from the ACT secured second place, 128 pins behind Buxton, marking her highest finish for 2024. The podium was rounded out by Samantha Matthews from Western Australia, who remains the number one ranked senior female bowler for 2024 despite finishing 172 pins behind Buxton on the weekend.

Male Division Champion

Tasmanian Ashley Riley continued his stellar year by winning the men’s division with a total of 3,984, averaging an impressive 221.3. This victory adds to Riley’s accolades for 2024, including his win at the Hammer QLD Seniors Classic in January and a sixth-place finish at the John Sullivan Senior AO. Bowlarama Wetherill Park is proving to be a happy hunting ground for the Tasmanian, with the victory also making Ashley a back-to-back champion, and winner of both events that have taken place.

The competition was fierce, with only 86 pins separating the top four places but a blistering start from Ashley Riley posting 947 from the first four games made him the one to chase down.

Gosford City bowler Troy Byrne finished as the runner-up, just 27 pins behind Riley. Byrne, who recorded the highest game of the male division with a 289, has had a quietly impressive year with two top 20 finishes, culminating in his first podium finish for 2024 on the weekend. Victorian Alan Notman took third place, continuing his confident performance after his recent win at the SA Seniors Classic.

60 & Over Division

The 60 and over division proved to be very popular, with more people entering this division than the standard 50 and over section whilst featuring some of the sport’s big names.

One of those big names was Andrew Frawley. A decorated Australian representative as a bowler, and coach, Frawley has competed in three ranked events for 2024 including the Hammer QLD Seniors Classic and Melbourne Tenpin Cup.

Andrew Frawley dominated the male division, finishing with a total of 4,138 and an incredible average of 229.9. Starting slowly, by the end of day one, Frawley was on fire shooting 1,035 in the last four games. Frawley’s victory was comprehensive producing a score higher than the 50 and over champion Ashley Riley, with Warren Stewart finishing as the runner-up, 310 pins behind, and Victorian Mick Talevski in third, 321 pins behind.

In the female 60 and over division, Victorian Christine Clark added another title to her collection, finishing with a total of 3,501 and an average of 194.5. The Bendigo Bowling star continues to have a productive year with a runner-up at the SA Senior Classic, 7^th at the John Sullivan Senior Australian Open, and 12^th at the Hammer.

Julie Harrison secured the runner-up spot, 157 pins behind Clark, while Victorian Lee Booth rounded out the podium, 183 pins behind the leader.

FUTURE FRAMES

Tenpin Bowling Australia wishes to congratulate all bowlers who competed in this weekend’s event, and thanks Bowlarama Wetherall Park for putting on another successful event.

The final event of the season, the TBA50 National Masters, will take place in November at the AGL National High-Performance Centre on the Sunshine Coast, concluding the 2024 Senior and Grand Senior bowling season. Information regarding this event is expected to be released within the next two weeks.
