Trent Webber and Chloe Jones have put on a dominant display to win the 2019 Werribee Youth Cup at Wyncity Bowl & Entertainment yesterday.

With both bowlers qualifying for the match play rounds as the number two seeds, it was the five head-to-head matches which saw the pair climb to the top of the leader board.

For Webber, a 194 in match one was enough to gain 20 bonus pins.  In matches two and three the South Australian gained a further 20 bonus pins to place himself in contention with the final matches to go.  In match four, Webber took a further 20 bonus pins and with the 2019 title in reaching distance the pressure started to mount.

Requiring a score above the card to take the title, Webber bowled 223 to win the match and title by 78 pins from second placed Brandon Edwards (4456) and fellow South Australian Lachlan Stephenson (4452) in third.

On Sunday when entering the matchplay rounds Chloe Jones was looking to improve on her 8th placing in last year’s event.  After bowling 200 in the opening match and gaining the bonus pins, the Townsville bowler took a further 40 bonus pins in matches 2 and 3 to put herself in contention.

After failing to gain any bonus pins in match 4, Jones had Grace Fahy and Amy Shoesmith applying the pressure and in match five, a 183 was enough to see the Australian representative win the 2019 title and finish 21 pins ahead of second placed, Grace Fahy (3025) and Amy Shoesmith (2979) in third.

In qualifying Jones averaged 199 across the 10 games which included a high game of 244 in the sixth with Webber finishing the first block of qualifying in top spot averaging 229 to slip into second place in stage 2 after bowling games of 254, 187, 171, 234 and 202.

At the conclusion of the tournament, New Era Bowling owner Adam Hayes thanked Wyncity and the tournament organisers.  “I’d like to thank Wyncity for the opportunity to help with sponsorship of this event, I enjoy contributing to the grass roots of our sport in particular in the pro shop and coaching,” Hayes said.
